THE STAINED GLASS
Paintings by Clare Nelson

Nothing more materially opaque than bricks and mortar, stone, wood and tile, pigment on canvas, you say. Look again, and again; where even the clearest glass is obtusely, obtrusively visible, here the laying of place on place to build up an affectively charged pictorial plane seems to lay bare the common promiscuity of inhabited space and lived experience, transparency laid on transparency, rendering a surface whose depths are those of those streets, those rooms, those encounters and realizations, whose possession is and was a robbing and a giving. The light of a summer evening, the dark of a face or a wall; the wares shining in polished order or kicked and spurned; the sea there, something smelt, felt and half heard, drawn along the shady, vibrant air and tendering a hope of yourself, then… your own land, your own door, your own remembered image in the dirty glass, the theft and the offering.
